Home to more than 500,000 species, which represents nearly 4% of the total species estimated worldwide, making Costa Rica one of the 20 countries with the highest biodiversity in the world.

With its unique geography forming a bridge between North and South America, it makes Costa Rica a premier destination for nature lovers.

-There are over 1,200 species of butterflies and at least 8,000 species of moths.

-Approximately 225 reptiles are found in Costa Rica. Over 70 species are lizards and about 120 species of snakes.  5 of the world’s 7 species of sea turtles nest on it’s beaches. The  American Crocodile and Spectacled Caimen are found in the rivers of Costa Rica.

-Home to nearly 250 species of mammals. Including four species of monkeys and two species of sloths.  Bats comprise more than half of the mammal species in the country. Large fauna, such as tapir and jaguar are rarely encountered.

-Nearly 900 bird species have been recorded in Costa Rica, which 600 of the bird species are permanent residents.

-Costa Rica is home to around 175 amphibians , 85% of which are frogs.
