Slater Big Emotional Win at Chope over John John

August 25th, 2016

Kelly Slater gets an emotional win at the Billabong Pro Tahiti with outstanding surfing in an epic finals showdown over John John Florence.  Not the biggest Chope we have seen, but none the less there were perfect barrels and the best tube rider on the planet showed us he is still the man.  Slater credited the win as one of his best ever and moved him into the top ten for the first time this year.  John John Florence who came in second jumped to number 1 in the world rankings surpassing Matt Wilkinson who had held the number 1 spot since the first event of the year.  John John won a very tight and epic semifinal heat over Gabriel Medina with incredible surfing just edging past him to get into the finals.  Matt Wilkinson won the first two events of the year giving him a big lead, but now sees himself in second and falling after loosing his early momentum.  Most people have thought Wilkinson would loose his lead as he did.  With 4 events left on the year it looks to be a head to head contest between John John Florence and Gabriel Medina for the World Title.

Next event up will be the Hurley Pro at Trestles September 07-18.  The world title race has gotten very exciting with John John holding the number one spot for the first time in his career.  Wilko looks to get back on track to stay in the title race and Gabriel Medina will be determined to get the yellow jersey.  Looking forward to the last events of the year and how this all shapes up.  I like many have thought for awhile that John John is now the best surfer in the world, but he has not always done well in contests as one would think.  Seeming more determined than ever he is now in position to capture his first world title.  Big congrats again to Mr. Slater who never gets old.

See you at Trestles
